No, I am not Jaron Lanier. I just thought that this post needed a picture, and I happen to agree with the quote. And also almost everything I’ve read from him. We disagree on some things, but that may be due to my not knowing what I’m talking about.
In an earlier Iconoclasms post, back in July, I disclosed some of my ambitions for this website:
a plan to begin subscription service
to begin to allow comments,
and above all, to post content more regularly.
I’ve decided on some adjustments:
I don’t intend to begin a subscription service until after the November election. Voluntary contributions will be welcomed, if I can just get around to concluding the process of setting up Stripe (I seem to have displeased the program, somehow…I dunno. Some of these money things online, you can’t even stop for a lunch break.)
I may allow comments some time next year. They will be open, of course. There will be a Fire Pit. I retain the right to close comments at any time, for any reason. No different than anyone else. And you have your right to screen shots. That’s the “blogosphere” for you…
(why are “Blogs” out, and “Tweets” are still in? Isn’t a Tweet just ultra-lightweight Blogging? Either that or, its a link to someone else’s Blog, I mean article, I mean nonfiction essay…can we all just go back to being writers or essayists now? Isn’t the branding meme deal over yet? Why not?)
I intend to post long-form comment more regularly.
But I’m already posting shorter-form content quite frequently- much of it is to be found in my Notes section. Most of my Substack Notes consist of comments on stories by other writers, often 300-500 words. My comments often run beneath the fold: not quite long enough to qualify as a deep dive into a given topic, but much longer than the usual story comment.
Substack Notes is easy to overlook on the page of Substack writers. On my home page, the link entrance is found only once, the word “Notes” in very small print at the top of the page. (Not a great way to seriously compete with Twitter, or even to competently function as a Breaking Bulletin source within the realm of Substack readership.) Here’s an additional link to my Notes page: https://substack.com/@adwjeditor/notes (see how easy that was? parallel processing)
Notes is where you’ll find my writings and musings, until I manage to complete another of my longer-form drafts. That’s Substack Notes
